Bagpipes & Burns Day

greg the piper with residents for burns day

On the 25th January, residents and visitors gathered here at Bothwell Castle in Lanarkshire for an unforgettable Burns Night celebration. Leading the festivities was Greg the Piper, resplendent in traditional Scottish attire, in a full Highland tartan kilt, sporran, and plaid draped across his shoulder. He toured the home with his bagpipes, filling the air with his music, stirring hearts and evoking Scotland's rugged spirit here at Bothwell Castle Care Home.

Burns Day, or Burns Night, is an annual Scottish celebration on January 25 honouring the birthday of national poet Robert Burns, born in 1759. Originating from the first Burns Supper in 1801 at Burns Cottage in Alloway, it features traditional feasts with haggis ceremonially paraded to bagpipes and recited poetry like the "Address to a Haggis," accompanied by neeps and tatties, whisky toasts, recitals of works such as "Auld Lang Syne," and ceilidh dancing.
