Dementia Friendly Gardening Club
The residents of Bothwell Castle Care Home have been reaping the benefits of the summer sunshine with the launch of our new Dementia Friendly Gardening Club. Family and friends have enthusiastically joined their loved ones in this exciting venture, making the most of the dry weather to engage in gardening activities that bring joy and therapeutic benefits to all involved.
The garden space at Bothwell Castle Care Home in Uddingston was meticulously reviewed by June Andrews, a renowned dementia specialist advisor and Professor Emeritus in Dementia Studies. June provided valuable insights on how to design a garden that caters to the needs of residents with dementia. Her recommendations focused on creating an environment that is both stimulating and calming, with areas designated for fun activities and relaxation, surrounded by a variety of scents and textures to engage the senses.
The new gardening club has quickly become a beloved part of life at Bothwell Castle. Residents who were avid gardeners in the past have found joy in rekindling their passion, while others, who may not have been as keen on gardening, have discovered a newfound appreciation for the simple act of planting and tending to flowers and plants.
The gardening club also serves as a unique opportunity for residents to reminisce and share stories, fostering deeper connections among family members and creating a supportive community within the care home. The social aspect of the club has been especially beneficial, as relatives bond with each other, extending their own support networks.
In addition to the emotional and social benefits, gardening offers significant physical advantages. Engaging in gardening activities helps maintain balance, strength and flexibility, which are crucial for individuals living with dementia. The sense of purpose that comes from nurturing plants and seeing them grow contributes positively to the residents' quality of life.
The Dementia Friendly Gardening Club at Bothwell Castle Care Home stands as a testament to the power of nature and community in enriching the lives of those with dementia. As the flowers bloom and the gardens flourish, so do the spirits of the residents, who find solace and joy in this peaceful, green oasis.
