What is a Dementia Care Home?

Dementia care homes provide care and support to those living with dementia, from assisting with personal care and medication management to helping with mobility and communication. For someone living with low-level dementia, a residential dementia care home may be suitable, whereas a nursing dementia care home is more appropriate for those at a more advanced stage.

Dementia is a condition that typically affects a person’s cognitive abilities, such as thinking, speaking and remembering. During the early to mid stages, symptoms of dementia may be forgetting appointments and dates or misplacing items. Dementia is a progressive condition meaning in some cases, symptoms may worsen. Symptoms of a more advanced stage of dementia may be struggling in social situations or with everyday tasks such as maintaining a household.

As dementia can have varying symptoms and severity, the level and type of care that is required is very much dependent on the person living with it. There are various options that can be considered when looking for a dementia care home, such as a residential care home or a nursing home. Both environments are highly supportive, where care and support are given around-the-clock by staff who are trained to assist with the varying levels of dementia.
