Building Connections Across Generations with our Pen Pal Project

At Bothwell Castle Care Home, we understand the importance and impact of intergenerational relationships for our residents and the children involved. Through various initiatives, we have enjoyed seeing the residents of Bothwell Castle share wisdom, stories and energy with the younger members of our community in the Glasgow area.

As part of our activity programme this summer, we introduced a new pen pal project in collaboration with Holytown Primary School. Our residents wrote letters to the children of the school, sent them off, and were delighted to receive thoughtful replies in following days.

The letters arrived at Bothwell Castle Care Home and the residents had a wonderful time opening each one, reading about hobbies, interests and life at primary school from the children. These replies got everyone talking, laughing and reminiscing about childhood and family. 

Alongside spreading joy into our care home, the pen pal project helps to solidify meaningful connections across the years that benefit everyone. Residents feel part of the community, valued and respected by the younger generation, while the children have the chance to learn and appreciate the older generation. 

Our activity programme at Bothwell Castle is centred around the wellbeing of our residents, and moments like these create long-lasting memories that everyone can enjoy.
