Confidence Blooms at Bothwell Castle: Our Resident’s Story
Many people suffer a knock in confidence when moving into a care home, for fear of losing their independence and identity. Although these feelings are normal, it’s vital to remember that with thoughtfully personalised care and a compassionate team, care home life can be engaging, fulfilling and enjoyable. Our residents at Bothwell Castle benefit hugely from our supportive environment, as shown in this resident’s story. She has chosen to stay anonymous but wanted to share her feelings of gratitude and joy for Bothwell Castle and our incredible team.
Before she began receiving our residential care in July 2023, this lovely lady was hugely sociable and outgoing. She spent much of her life as a performer in the theatre and enjoyed a vibrant lifestyle of cruising and attending social events. Unfortunately, when she moved into Bothwell Castle, she had lost all confidence. Most of her time was spent alone in her bedroom, as she was very reluctant to engage with staff or her fellow residents.
The team at Bothwell Castle took their time to get to know this resident, by chatting to her about her life story, interests and speaking to her family. Slowly but surely, she became more receptive, thanks to staff respecting her boundaries and learning how best to manage her anxiety in a non-invasive way. The supportive and nurturing environment we have created here at Bothwell Castle helped our resident feel safe and comfortable. These vital foundations enabled and encouraged her confidence to grow, alongside her relationships with our friendly carers and fellow residents.
Since moving into our care home near Glasgow, this resident has flourished, and she now eagerly participates in activities, outings and hobbies every day. She particularly enjoys our music and dancing sessions, as this keeps her connected to her musical theatre roots and identity. Friendships have blossomed over coffee and cake, with the backdrop of our relaxing communal areas. She now looks forward to socialising, often making her friends cups of coffee and even enjoying a glass of wine together in our reception area.
Life at Bothwell Castle has also nurtured her passion for gardening. The balcony area she has developed with flowers and plants is now a stand-out feature of our home, that brings both her and other residents so much joy.
Thanks to our staff’s gentle encouragement and person-centred support, this resident has also regained the confidence to go out shopping by herself. This sense of independence is substantial, whether she is picking up fresh flowers to arrange and care for in our reception area, or popping out on the bus for a relaxing browse through the neighbouring town of Hamilton.
Our resident says, “For myself, I so enjoy and now feel privileged to be a part of Bothwell Castle and enjoy all it has to offer. Set in the wonderful grounds, which are a part of the original Castle, and I now view as my “home”, which I treat as a hotel.
“I am very well looked after and happy here as part of the family. I also enjoy lending a hand where I can be of use and give comfort as a former Samaritan.”
